Daughters of

Our Lady of the Garden

Imitating Jesus as Daughters of Mary

The Daughters of Our Lady of the Garden, founded by St. Anthony Gianelli in 1829, is a Religious Congregation of Pontifical rite, dedicated to apostolic activity.

When our Founder met with the first group of Sisters in Chiavari, Italy, he called them “Daughters of Mary,” and he added the words “of Our Lady of the Garden” as an act of homage to the miraculous image venerated in Chiavari.

Our Mission & Charism

Our mission has its origin in the mission of Christ, and follows our Founder’s inspiration of service in the Church. Attentive to the needs of the times, in creative fidelity to the founding Charism of vigilant evangelical charity, we do our best for the good of all persons, with a special love for the poor. In sisterly communion, we joyfully take up the challenge of becoming everything to everyone, with a commitment which knows no limit other than the impossible or the inopportune.

Serving the Church

Because our mission has its origin in the mission of Christ, our Institute’s apostolic action is universal: schools, hospitals, social services, parishes, youth and adult ministries, nursing home care, and missions.

Around the World

We serve the Church in 13 countries on 5 continents: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Democratic Republic of Congo, India, Italy, Palestine, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Spain, United States, and Uruguay.

With Vigilant Evangelical Charity

In creative fidelity to the founding Charism of vigilant evangelical charity, we do our best for the good of all persons, with a special love for the poor.

Called to a Greater Love

“The Holy Spirit is always active in history… The Spirit, in fact, from the very troubled nature of the nations calls forth in many the dream of a different world already present among us… Consecrated persons are called to place their very existence at the service of the cause of the kingdom of God, leaving everything behind and closely imitating the form of life of Jesus Christ.”

— Starting Afresh from Christ, # 1

Our Heritage

Sensitive to the needs of people and inflamed with charity, on January 12, 1829, St. Anthony Gianelli gathered together a group of thirteen women willing to dedicate themselves completely to the glory of God and the salvation of people.  From then to this day, dedicated women have never failed to carry on his work by teaching, nursing, and helping all those in need.
